Overview

Overview

Hatched is a mobile application designed to help recently empty nested parents through the transition they face when their children leave the home. It was created in Autumn 2018 in a 10-week course HCDE 318: Introduction to User-Centered Design as part of the Bachelor’s of Science in Human Centered Design and Engineering program at the University of Washington.

Our team decided to focus on empty nested parents as we all had recent experience with our own parents being empty nested and were aware of some of the challenges they face as well as the lack of targeted solutions available to help them. After discussing the challenges we saw our parents experience, we noticed thatdespite differences in lifestylethey all had similar struggles when their children left the home. This inspired us to design a solution to help them.

Problem Statement

Being a parent is often considered to be a full-time job.  When young adults gain the autonomy to leave the house, many parents are impacted by the drastic change in lifestyle—just as they were when their children first entered their lives.  This change may lead to them struggling to adapt to life without their children.
